Epoch's HP Series of InfiniteStorage Servers are NFS-compatible file
servers that brings 20-90 gigabytes of data online for networks of UNIX
workstations. By automatically staging infrequently accessed files
into an optical library from the server's hard disk, the hard disk
never fills up and is always available. Automatic backup and disaster
recovery backup of the server is also provided with the server. The
staging of files in and out of optical storage is transparent to the
user or any applications which expect to find their files on the hard
disks.
This solution requires the cooperative selling of HP's optical library
and Epoch's custom InfiniteStorage Server. Epoch's server product
includes a single disk and a single 8mm tape drive for backup. The
software provides for management of offline volumes, either optical or
tape, to extend capacity beyond the capacity of the libraries. Support
of the custom InfiniteStorage Server will come from Epoch.
Features
-Epoch's UNIX operating system
-Epoch's Server Controller
-HP's HP6300 Optical Libraries
-UNIX administration
-20-90 Gigabytes of Online Storage
-8mm Backup Capabilities
-Automatic file and media management; online and offline
-NFS Network access
Benefits
-Winchester performance for frequently accessed files
-High density optical storage for infrequently accessed files
-Reduced costs by..
-combining the capacity of inexpensive optical storage with the
performance of Winchester disks
-reduced administrative costs due to automated data management
-improved productivity by keeping data online that used to go into a
tape library
-Sharable storage resource
-Transparent User access to their own files
Sell this optical storage solution when
-you have a customer who needs to keep Gbytes of data online in a
network of
workstations with ..
-data that is infrequently accessed but needs to be kept highly
available
-users who do not want to have learn any new commands for the Server
-you have a customer who wants to reduce the administrative costs in
managing a network of workstation
EPOCH SOLUTIONS COST -VS- SAVINGS
Epoch's solution provides transparant file migration to free up disk
space, and unattented backup to eliminate the need for an operator and
tape drive. The savings are obvious!
Traditional costs Epoch
Server Costs $300,000 $170,000
MMaintenance Costs $ 72,000 $ 33,084
Additional Storage Costs $ 22,425 $ 7,600
Administrative Cost $248,700 $ 5,322
End User Impact $179,250 $ 8,513
--------- --------
$822,375 $224,919
SAVINGS = $597,456

Cost of Storage Management."
